Understand the GPS Track Map

Read the track map and link it to the current sonar position.

Use this when

You want to understand what the GPS track map shows, how the playhead marker works, and how the map relates to what you see in the sonar view.

Before you start

The map only appears when a recording contains GPS data. If the recording was taken without a GPS fix, the map panel shows "No GPS data" and remains blank.

What the map shows

The map panel sits in the right sidebar, between the contacts list and the depth chart. It displays:

  • An orange line — the full GPS track of the recording from start to finish.
  • A filled orange circle — the playhead marker, showing your current position in the recording. This circle moves as you play or scrub through the sonar.

The map fits the entire track in view when a recording loads. Zoom and pan at any time using the + / controls in the bottom-right corner, or use a scroll wheel.

How the playhead marker stays in sync

As the sonar plays, the orange circle moves along the track in real time. The map never auto-scrolls or re-centers — if the marker moves off screen, pan to it manually or zoom out.

You can also drag the orange circle directly along the track. Dragging it scrubs the sonar to the nearest sonar ping at that location.

Resizing the map panel

Drag the thin divider above the map panel (between the contacts list and the map) up or down to give the map more or less height.

What you should see

An orange line covering the full route, with a filled orange circle sitting on the point in the track that matches the current sonar frame. As the sonar plays, the circle moves forward along the line.

If it does not work

  • "No GPS data" shown — the recording file does not contain GPS coordinates. This is normal for recordings taken without a connected GPS unit.
  • Track line visible but orange circle is missing — the recording loaded but playback has not started. Press play or drag the scrubber. The circle appears once a ping with valid GPS is reached.
  • Map tiles are blank or grey — a network connection is required to load map tiles. Connect to the internet and re-open the recording.
