Use the Target Box Tool

Draw a target box around an object for follow-up.

Use this when

You want to frame an object on the sonar and get its length and width in one step. The Target Box tool draws a rectangle around the target and calculates both dimensions from the corners you drag.

Before you start

Open a recording and scrub to a frame where the object is clearly visible. The Target Box tool works on all sonar views, including side-scan.

Draw a target box

  1. Press B or click the Target Box icon in the left toolbar. The cursor changes to a crosshair.
  2. Click and hold at one corner of the object.
  3. Drag to the opposite corner and release.
  4. A dashed rectangle appears on the canvas. A callout shows L: [length] x W: [width] in your chosen units.

The tool switches back to Cursor automatically after you release.

Save the box as a contact

  1. After drawing the box, click Add Contact in the callout.
  2. The Contact dialog opens with Length and Width already filled in from the box dimensions.
  3. Update the Label, Classification, and Confidence fields as needed.
  4. Click Save.

The contact is added to the Contacts list and pinned on the canvas at the center of the box.

What you should see

A dashed rectangle over the target with a callout reading the measured dimensions. Clicking Add Contact opens the Contact dialog with the title "Contact" and both size fields pre-populated.

If it does not work

  • Crosshair does not appear — confirm a recording is loaded. The toolbar is inactive before a file opens.
  • Callout shows dashes instead of numbers — the box was too small to calculate a distance at the current zoom level. Zoom in and redraw.
  • Add Contact button is missing — the callout only shows the button after you release the drag. If you clicked elsewhere the callout was dismissed. Press B and redraw.
